EU citizens who are currently living and working in the UK will need to demonstrate they have the right to do so once the UK leaves the EU. During the latter part of 2018, the Government implemented two private pilot schemes only open to employees in the higher education, health and social care sectors. Due to its success, the EU settlement scheme has now rolled out its ‘test phase’ to the public.
This new, wider test phase will require applicants to complete an online application process and prove their identity by using the EU Exit: Identity Document Check app. The app also offers assistance to individuals who may need additional help in making their applications.
The EU Settlement Scheme will be fully open by 30 March 2019 to individuals who arrive in the UK before 31 December, should the UK leave the EU with a formal withdrawal agreement in place, or before 29 March 2019 in the event of a ‘no deal’ Brexit. Individuals will be able to apply until 30 June 2021 under the draft Withdrawal Agreement, or until 31 December 2020 if there is no deal.
